
Niacinamide: what it does, and which percentage you need
Niacinamide is in two of our products, and that is not duplication. It does something different in a night serum than in a night cream, and that difference is the best way in to what this ingredient is actually good at.

What it does
It strengthens the barrier
This is the effect with the firmest evidence. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, helps skin make more ceramides and other lipids in its top layer. That is the layer keeping water in and irritants out. Stronger barrier, less water loss, skin that reacts less readily.
It reduces redness
It calms inflammation, which makes it useful if you flush easily or if marks stay red after a spot has gone.
It fades dark spots differently from vitamin C
Vitamin C slows the production of pigment. Niacinamide slows its delivery, limiting how much pigment gets passed to the surrounding skin cells. They act at different points, which is why they work well together rather than being a duplication.
It takes the edge off shine
There is research showing less sebum with sustained use. The effect is modest and not visible for everyone. Expect a T-zone that shines less quickly, not a switch from oily skin to normal skin.
How much do you need?
This is where the confusion sits, because percentages on packages vary wildly.
Most research works between two and five per cent, and that is where the effects on barrier, redness and pigment show up. Above five per cent the gain shrinks while the chance of stinging and flushing goes up. Ten per cent is not a stronger version of five, it is mainly a bigger number on the front.
A warm, flushing feeling after applying usually means the concentration is higher than your skin finds comfortable. Not dangerous, but not necessary either.
The advice that is wrong
You still read that you must not combine niacinamide with vitamin C, because they supposedly cancel each other out.
That comes from 1950s lab work on raw materials at high temperatures. In finished products, at room temperature, it does not happen to any relevant degree. Use them in the same routine. If you would rather separate them, do it for a simpler reason: vitamin C is most useful in the morning, and niacinamide works whenever.

That first job is the important one. Retinol works, but while you are building up to it, it brings dryness and sensitivity. Niacinamide alongside makes that easier to live with, which is why you so often see the two in one formula.

Frequently asked questions
How long before I see something?
Less redness and calmer skin within two to four weeks. For pigment and texture, eight to twelve weeks is more realistic.
Can I use it morning and evening?
Yes. It is stable and not light-sensitive, so both work.
Can I combine it with retinol?
Yes, and it is one of the better combinations. Niacinamide supports the barrier while retinol stimulates the skin.
What if it stings?
Move to a lower percentage rather than pushing through. And if your skin is already irritated, repair first, because on a broken barrier almost anything stings.
